Curtain Energy

Recently I saw an ad on the television. This advertisement was directed at the consumers of gas and electric services in our area. The advertisement was for tips on how to make a home more energy efficient in both the summer and the winter. Many of the tips were obvious. Turn your thermostat up in the summer to reduce on air conditioning and electrical costs and make sure your heat is not so high in the winter. Put a timer on your water heater. Turn out the lights and unplug unneeded electrical devices. The one thing that surprised me the most was that the spokesman then stated that using curtains could save on energy costs.

A good window curtain can preserve energy in your home, or block out energy coming from outside of your home. Buying thicker curtains in the winter do several things for a home. The thicker curtains add insulation to a window assisting in holding out the cold air that comes in. It is amazing to walk behind a curtain in the winter time and get quite a chill being under the curtain and next to a window. Imagine how much you save in the winter with the added wind guard you have in the form of a window curtain! Each room in your home can benefit from this added bonus of beauty and energy conservation.

In the summer one enemy that we face in most of the United States is the heat. The Earth tilts toward the sun and suddenly the rays of heat that come are much more hot. Asphalt bakes and cars become scorching places to be. A window pouring in sunlight can do a lot of damage to an electric bill. The same principle applies from the winter to the summer. A good thin curtain can block out much of the sun’s rays and help keep the home cool for many hours of the day. Helping keep a home cool means more comfort for you and less to pay at the end of the month.

Not only will this assist you in saving money, but a good window curtain is doubly good because using less money means burning less coal at power plants. Burning less coal means a cleaner and healthier environment. Being environmentally conscientious does include recycling, carpooling, and taking public transportation. Have you ever thought of your window curtain as a part of your green routine?
